The intention of the NSLHD MHDA is to provide recovery-oriented, trauma informed services that are guided by evidence based practices and collaboration.

The CYMHS Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) provides specialist Child and Youth Mental Health consultation to children and young people who present to the Emergency Department (ED) and hospital inpatient settings including the Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC), Paediatric / Children’s ward and Adult Mental Health Inpatient Units.

The CYMHS CNC is an expert in the field of Child and Youth Mental Health nursing who will provide leadership, advice and recommendations on all aspects of the mental health nursing care provided to children and young people (aged 0 – 18 years). The CYMHS CNC also consults on matters relating to the safe and appropriate use of nursing practices for this client group within the wider Hospital context.
 
The CYMHS CNC is primarily responsible for ensuring that specialised CYMHS assessment, formulation and care planning is provided in an effective and timely manner to meet Emergency Treatment Performance (ETP) and mental health patient flow objectives within the ED. Additionally the CNC will provide expert consultation regarding the delivery of nursing care and comprehensive discharge planning for children and young people admitted to inpatient settings for mental health difficulties.

The CYMHS CNC will ensure that family-focused care is provided which will involve collaborative care planning with children / young people and their wider family or support network as appropriate. The CNC will assist to co-ordinate liaison with parents, carers, other public or private health practitioners, school counsellors, non-governmental organisations and other relevant services involved in the child or young person’s care.
 
In collaboration with ED, paediatric and adult mental health staff, the CNC will develop and evaluate quality improvement processes / research projects pertaining to mental health care for children and young people within these settings. The CYMHS CNC will develop and deliver education and training to Emergency department, paediatric and adult mental health staff regarding caring for children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties to increase capacity across services to provide high quality care.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
  2. Authority to practice as a Registered Nurse from AHPRA with at least 5 years full -time equivalent post registration experience and approved post graduate nursing qualifications within mental health, child and adolescent mental health or other qualifications and substantial clinical experience relevant to this setting..
  3. Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead evidence based nursing practice in the assessment, care planning and care delivery to children and young people with complex mental health issues. Ability to provide expert clinical consultancy, networking and communicating across a range of key internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with a range of children and young people aged from 0-18 years people and their parents/ carers, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a member of a multidisciplinary team and independently.
  6. Demonstrated computer skills with experience using MS Office programs and electronic filing systems.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to strengths based practice and recovery focused care as well as consumer and carer participation and consultation.
  8. Demonstrated experience with research activities, developing and implementing education programmes.
