Salary Range: $65,976 - $71,004 (Plus Super)

About the role

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHO) at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce plays an important role in the care, welfare and assistance of Aboriginal patients and families. The ALO assists patients and families to access health and support services and to ensure a responsive and respectful patient journey through the provision of advocacy in the clinical and non-clinical aspects of the patient journey. To do this, the ALO provides a level of support to clients regarding their admission, understanding of treatment, case management, referral pathways, and discharge and an awareness of follow-up treatment for Aboriginal patients.

The ALO is notified of Aboriginal patients when they are admitted or when they attend Outpatients clinics. This connection is reliant on patients choosing to identify as Aboriginal when talking with staff. The ALO is aligned through Social Work and can be contacted through the Department of Social Work and Psychology for patient support in urgent or essential situations and has the resources of the Department available for support and professional education as needed. ALOs are highly valued members of the multidisciplinary team across Calvary.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
An understanding of the needs of Aborignal and Torres Strait Islander people and health workers in healthcare settings

Selection Criteria Essential: A minimum qualification of Certificate 3 in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or have completed at least 1 year of a health related undergraduate degree
Essential: Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures and an understanding of the issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary Australian society, particularly in the context of health care services
Essential: Ability to draw on knowledge of the local Aboriginal Community to advocate for the needs of Aboriginal patients by educating and advising other health professionals on the delivery of culturally safe and secure healthcare
Essential: Ability to effectively and sensitively communicate with patients, families and staff in the health care environment
Essential: Ability to organise workloads, to be flexible and to respond effectively to priorities and deadlines within a multidisciplinary team
Essential: Demonstrated capacity to follow policies and procedures and to use sound judgement
Essential: Demonstrated computer skills and ability to provide statistical data collected for monthly reports
