The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) is looking for a Plastic Surgeon to provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the plastic surgery service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).The primary responsibility for the position is the provision of plastic surgery at Wollongong and may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services and as approved via the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) to other facilities in ISLHD.

The Visiting Medical Officer will be appointed to complete one list per month at Wollongong Hospital.

You will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the plastic surgery service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). You will be responsible for the provision of specialist plastic surgery services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients at the relevant hospital. This role is primarily located at Wollongong however provision of services at other locations may be required.

You will ensure provision of high quality plastic surgery services to all patients within the ISLHD and will proactively:

  • Support the development of plastic surgery services
  • Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice
  • Support and develop plastic surgery research within the department
We welcome applicants who have completed an overseas fellowship. Additionally, those with a special interest and/or training in breast reconstruction, or head and neck cancer reconstruction.

Wollongong Hospital is a busy tertiary referral centre for the Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District (serving a population of approx. 450,000). Wollongong Hospital has a strong affiliation with the University of Wollongong and supports the training of Nursing, Medical and Allied Health staff.

Salary and conditions are in accordance with those of a VMO ‘Sessional’ contract for Wollongong Hospital.

Successful applicants to the role must provide certified documentation of vaccination history and pathology as part of their recruitment documentation. The applicant must be certified as compliant with http://www1.health.nsw.gov.au/pds/Pages/doc.aspx?dn=PD2018_009 before employment can commence.
  • Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and/or equivalent specialist recognition.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
