Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. This position is primarily based in the Triage & Assessment Centre (TAC) of the NBMLHD Mental Health Centre located at Nepean Hospital.

Successful applicants will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients and their families within the NBMLHD service. The TAC is a unique, recovery oriented, ED avoidance service that provides a timely mental health response. This position suits psychiatrists interested in assessment and management of acute psychiatric presentation and in working closely with Emergency and Acute Mental Health Services and the community.

Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 6 months will be considered. If successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.

Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to each facility. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters.

Successful applicants also participate in a District-wide after hour’s roster.

  1. Possess or be eligible for: registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA); Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as provided by the Health Insurance Act 1997 and the Staff Specialist (State) Award; current driver’s licence. Demonstrated commitment to Continuing Professional Development including capacity for reflective practice relevant to the Scope of Clinical Practice of the position.
  2. Proven capacity and/or demonstrated experience and/or qualifications in the provision of effective high quality mental health services within a psychiatry setting; demonstrated commitment to person-centred, recovery oriented, family inclusive, trauma informed and need adapted principles of care.
  3. Demonstrated ability to support and work collaboratively with interprofessional teams (including the peer, nursing, and allied health work force) and with other teams, agencies and health services, in the provision of high quality therapeutic care that is sensitive to biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual domains.
  4. Demonstrated capacity to communicate, negotiate and collaborate at a high level, both verbally and in written form, and to helpfully engage with and negotiate conflict and differences. Word processing skills necessary to complete expert documentation in the electronic record.
  5. Demonstrated skill and commitment to the teaching, training and supervision of medical staff and non-medical colleagues consistent with contemporary supervision and educational standards, to the support and education of medical students, and to the principles of interprofessional learning.
  6. Qualities, skills, attitudes and articulated values consistent with a senior medical practitioner working with persons receiving mental health care across the age span and their social networks, who provides leadership to fellow medical colleagues and who always demonstrates the highest ethical and professional standards.
  7. Experience with or proven capacity for activities that will improve the quality of service provision, including clinical governance and quality activities (such as audits and risk management activities) and appraisal of varying forms of evidence. Demonstrated commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.
  8. Familiarity with and support of basic, clinical and applied research activities relevant to the needs of the Mental Health Service and its staff and the ability to draw on values and research concepts in the appraisal of evidence, guidelines and quality improvement activities.
