JOB DESCRIPTION

The role of the Speech and Language Pathologist is to provide leadership and expert advice to ensure high quality speech and language pathology services are provided to young people involved with Youth Justice services. You will have a lead role in ensuring profession specific practice is integrated into the broader framework of the Youth Justice services provided.

Mandatory Requirements

Degree or higher qualification in Speech and Language Pathology and unconditional registration to practise in Queensland.
Possession of post graduate qualifications and or demonstration of postgraduate developmental experience through participation in relevant training programs is highly regarded.

Key Responsibilites of the Speech Pathologist role with Youth Justice is to:

  • Work directly with young people who are subject to youth justice interventions to assess and treat speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • Provide expert advice, consultation and support for practitioners on complex, profession-specific practice and client issues. This may include collaboration or co-ordination across disciplines, programs and business units within the Department and other agencies.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and develop and implement individualised support and intervention plans to assist young people in their on-going development.
  • Promote flexible and appropriate models of practice and support and advise on the development of practice within Youth Justice and their partners in supporting Youth Justice clients who have complex speech and communication needs (profession-specific and cross discipline).
  • Prepare and maintain high standard reports and client records consistent with departmental and professional requirements.
  • Lead the development and implementation of training programs for Youth Justice staff and other government and non-government agencies.

Additional Requirements

Applicants are required to nominate an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander person who is recognised and accepted within the community as a referee to support their ability to meet the key responsibilities.
Travel to rural and remote areas within Queensland will be a requirement of this role. This may involve travelling away from the business unit for a period of time; to distant locations; and/or using different modes of transport (light planes, boats and/or four wheel drive vehicles).
Travel is a requirement of this position, therefore, it is a requirement that the applicant hold a current “C” Class Drivers licence.
