Forensic mental health is a specialist area within the mental health service system. The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community.

These services are delivered through three streams, inpatient services at Thomas Embling Hospital, community services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service and prison based services at several locations. This position will be based at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and will be required to work across all Forensicare sites.


About the role:

The Research Manager contributes significantly to the profile of Forensicare by providing high level support and coordination of Forensicare’s research activities. The successful applicant will provide a range of duties that fall into three broad categories: 1) overseeing the development and commissioning of clinical service evaluations; 2) promoting and assisting staff to develop research projects, and 3) assisting with the translation of research for clinical practice. The position will develop key stakeholder relationships across the organisation, identifying strategic opportunities and overseeing the organisation's research activities.

The Research Manager will promote Forensicare’s research consultation capabilities and identify and assist in securing research opportunities and sources of research funding. The role will also support and encourage staff members to actively participate in research activities.


Duties:

  • Day-to-day oversight of all research and evaluation activity across the organisation.
  • Further development of research and evaluation coordination and monitoring systems across Forensicare services.
  • Development and management of Forensicare research governance procedures and activities including review and redevelopment of the Forensicare research governance framework as necessary.
  • Development and review of the Forensicare Research Strategy, facilitation of strategy implementation, and monitoring of outcomes.
  • Development and oversight of innovative strategies to improve research and evaluation activity and quality across the organisation.
  • Line management and supervision of Forensicare research staff
  • Student research supervision as appropriate
  • Development of research and evaluation frameworks for Forensicare services, demonstrating a high level expertise in evaluation logic mapping and development.
  • Establishment of service evaluation resources through liaison with internal and external resource providers and funding bodies.
  • Development and implementation of strategies to improve and maintain research dissemination and translation activity across the organisation
  • Coordination and contribution to the publication of key research and evaluation outcomes
  • Promoting and supporting the development of a research environment and culture within Forensicare which is intellectually challenging, stimulating and focused upon the achievement of research strategies and targets.
  • Develop and deliver education programs to up-skill Forensicare staff to conduct service based research.



Skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
  • A proven track record conducting and overseeing clinical service evaluation.
  • Demonstrated professional interest in areas that contribute to research consultation, education and training in forensic mental health and forensic behavioural science.
  • Proven track record in working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under general supervision and to plan strategically.
  • The ability to identify project opportunities through interactions with a range of agencies including government and industry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate scientific/academic concepts to a broad range of people.
  • Initiative, well developed organisational skills, and the ability to provide advice in an effective and timely manner.
  • Self-motivated person able to take significant responsibility for achieving agreed outcomes.


Mandatory qualifications & registrations:

  • A PhD or other doctoral level research degree in psychology or another relevant area of health.
