A career-defining opportunity is available within the Department of Neurology for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). We are seeking the services of an experienced Stroke Physician/Neurologist as Stroke Lead/Clinician (0.8 FTE) and to join General Neurology service for the ISLHD (0.2 FTE).

About the role:

You will be required to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience, expertise and specialised knowledge in stroke care and demonstrated aptitude in clinical governance in order to provide high quality care to stroke patients in the ISLHD and to effectively lead rapid integration of best practice developments in the rapidly evolving field of Stroke medicine. 

The role encompasses clinical on call, inpatient and outpatient duties, including both Stroke and General Neurology. 0.8 FTE will be dedicated to Stroke and distributed between 1. Stroke Governance district wide, where you will lead planning, coordination and implementation of Stroke services across the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) (~ 0.4 FTE) and 2. Stroke clinical on call, inpatient and outpatient duties (~0.4 FTE, at least 0.2 FTE at TWH). The role includes 0.2 FTE for TWH dedicated to General Neurology exclusive of Stroke: on call, inpatient, and outpatient duties (0.1 FTE General Neurology outpatient follow up clinic is expected).

Stroke and General Neurology on call and inpatient duties for TWH will be equitably rostered with the other Staff Specialist Neurologists. 

This position will support the Head of Department/Service Neurology for the ISLHD to achieve comprehensive and equitable stroke care delivery of high standard across the district. Foci will include:

  • Continuing development of processes and procedures
  • Coordination/resource distribution between local centres; technology integration (including telestroke Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital)
  • Liaison and integration with hospital, local and community stakeholders, external service providers (ECR, telestroke)
  • Liaison and integration with relevant external administrators (e.g. clinical trials, centralised data); and development of Stroke research in the ISLHD.

Stroke care setting for ISLHD:

The ISLHD is a forerunner in Stroke service provision with one of NSW's first geographical Stroke units, and has made rapid recent progress particularly in acute stroke service provision in a limited resource setting. The ISLHD is committed to the appropriate development of high quality stroke care.

The Wollongong Hospital (TWH) provides and will maintain 24/7 onsite acute stroke assessment via FAST+ team for thrombolysis and acute stroke referral, with specialised nurse and registrar attending call onsite and remote radiology access for Neurologists on call. TWH has dedicated acute and subacute stroke beds, stroke CNC, and a TIA clinic. Junior staff for TWH Neurology department currently comprise one core Neurology advanced trainee and one or two other ATs in elective Neurology and/or General Medicine Elective, two BPT trainees, and two residents (PGY 2, PGY 1).Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital (SDMH, Nowra) participates in the State Telestroke service for thrombolysis/ECR, has a 4 bed stroke ward with admission under General Physicians, and an experienced stroke CNC engaged in promoting strong state-level service development and community focus. One 0.5 FTE Neurologist and 0.5 Neurology Elective Trainee is based at SDMH. Shellharbour Hospital (SHH) refers to TWH for thrombolysis/ECR referral and is commencing a General Physician–led TIA clinic. All centres perform urgent CT brain, angiography and perfusion. ISLHD refers to SESLHD (POWH —1h 15min by road) for ECR. 

Wollongong Hospital Neurology nursing staffing is stable with high quotient of long-term experience in Neurology, and you will work closely with the dedicated allied health team on the Neurology ward. There is one EEG technician and one Neurophysiology nurse, with NCS/EMG, Botulinum toxin, and EEG provided onsite. The Neurology Unit cooperates and integrates with Neurosurgery and Neuropsychiatry (including dedicated FND service) with access to full suite of medical subspecialties.

About ISLHD:

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District is picturesque and extends from below the Royal National Park south of Sydney, to above the Victorian border: Helensburgh to North Durras, 250km along the southern East Coast of NSW, population > 400 000. Wollongong Hospital (TWH) is a 500+ bed hospital 1.5 hours south of Sydney, with a 34 bed Neurology Ward (8 bed monitored High Intensity Nursing Unit 1:3-1:4), busy ED and 24 bed ICU; Shoalhaven Hospital (SDMH, 200+ beds) in Nowra, 1h further south, has ED and ICU; Shellharbour Hospital (SHH, 200+ beds) is 20 min southeast of Wollongong with ED and subacute inpatient care. A number of smaller hospital facilities within the district provide rural care and/or specialised focus. ISLHD collaborates with the University of Wollongong including the Centre for Innovation and structured research initiatives. Medical students from UOW are placed at Wollongong hospital, with high retention to junior staffing and training positions.

Selection Crietria: 

  1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Neurology and/or equivalent and specialist recognition and further training/qualifications in Stroke including research and trial coordination capability; the successful applicant would ideally have both completed a Stroke Fellowship and gained extensive experience in Stroke medicine.
  3. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality Stroke and Neurology services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of quality improvement, policy and process development and relevant service development with attention to strategic and situational nuance and relevant detail.
  4. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other hospital staff.
  6. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
  8. Geographical availability commensurate with rostering, patient care, and site visit responsibilities.
