About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Staff Specialist Psychiatrist for a unique opportunity at Far West Local Health District. The role involves delivery of clinical care and multidisciplinary engagement via a telehealth arrangement for 3 weeks, followed by a week of onsite care delivery. This proceeds on a rotational 4 week basis.

You will be expected to provide clinical care to general adults as a majority, although will provide care to adolescents and old age presentations as well. Service delivery proportions between these populations may be negotiable with the Clinical Director depending on subspecialty training and certification.

About Broken Hill

Broken Hill is the centre of the Far West New South Wales outback and is 500km north east of Adelaide and 1,100km west of Sydney. There are daily flights to major cities. 

The Broken Hill Hospital has 100 beds that service a wide area with a population of 25,000 people. It is a rural teaching hospital, providing acute, non-acute and outpatient services, including dialysis and chemotherapy. It has an emergency department, general medical, surgical, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric, mental health and sub-acute beds. Support services include Pathology, Medical Imaging (CT scan), as well as a wide range of Allied and Primary Health services.

Broken Hill is a true outback experience that is difficult to describe, but starts with incredible sunrises and phenomenal night sky views with the entire Milky Way visible on most nights. You will need a camera.

Selection Criteria

  1. Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident, evidence of a Medical qualification that is registrable with the Medical Board of Australia, current valid Working with Children Check
  2. Evidence of a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
  3. Demonstrated significant experience in the field of Psychiatry and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team
  5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to area of practice and a willingness to commit to an equitable hospital on-call roster.
  6. Willingness to teach medical students and other staff of the hospital when reasonably requested with demonstrated understanding of and commitment to clinical quality improvement and peer review, equal employment opportunity and Occupational Health Safety and Rehabilitation
  7. A creative and professional interest in nurturing a novel model of care, with flexibility to adapt to a complex environment and willingness to contribute to its success
  8. Subspecialty training or recognised certification in any or a combination of the following areas would be desirable for selection of the successful candidate: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Drug and Alcohol Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Electroconvulsive Therapy and/or Psychotherapy.
