The Cottage Program is a service that supports the provision of inpatient care in a home style setting for adults aged 18 years to 65 years who are experiencing serious mental illness and associated co-morbidities. Patient diagnoses within the program include Schizophrenia, Cognitive Impairment, Polysubstance Dependencies, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome. The Cottage Program sits within the Clinical Rehabilitation Unit which forms part of the greater Morisset Hospital Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service.

As an Occupational Therapist within the Cottage Program, you will provide a high quality clinical service to patients and their families and carers to ensure the provision of optimal health outcomes for consumers of the service. This position manages a caseload of 15 male consumers across 3 cottages containing 5 beds each. The Clinical Rehabilitation Unit is divided into 3 teams each with their own Occupational Therapist. This role will directly work with 2 other experienced Occupational Therapists within the Clinical Rehabilitation Unit and also as part of the wider Occupational Therapy team across the site. The Occupational Therapy team has close links to other Allied Health staff (Psychology, Social Work, Dietitian, Exercise Physiology) as well as Nursing and Medical staff.

The Occupational Therapy Team Leader is located onsite for daily support including start and end of day handover and toolbox huddles. This position is also supported by the Nurse Unit Manager for unit wide collaboration and the Nursing Team Leader for support and planning related to the direct 15 consumer caseload. The successful candidate will receive an initial orientation to the role provided by Occupational Therapy Team Leader and the opportunity to shadow other Occupational Therapists in initial phase of orientation to observe the Occupational Therapy role in this setting. You will also be provided with ongoing Peer supervision regularly onsite and ongoing clinical supervision as per Allied Health Supervision guidelines. This position will link in to the Hunter New England Mental Health Occupational Therapy Network with education and professional development opportunities promoted by Head of Discipline for Occupational Therapy.

The successful candidate will be confident in managing a 15 consumer caseload and completing Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions in psychosocial settings. You will possess experience managing an Adult Inpatient Mental Health caseload and will be skilled in conducting occupationally focussed one on one and group interventions for the stated caseload. You will be considerate of Trauma Informed Care, Culturally Safe practice and Co-morbidities related to serious mental illness and will be patient when working in a setting where functional rehabilitation may take time and not follow a linear process. You will also have the courage to speak up about negative workplace culture and contribute actively to maintaining a respectful workplace.
