Szalmuk Family Department of Medical Oncology

The Szalmuk Family Department of Medical Oncology focuses on performing high quality clinical and basic science research with an emphasis on answering clinically important questions that can be translated into better quality patient care and outcomes.

Cabrini Hospital has an extremely large medical oncology and haematology service, allowing brisk recruitment into clinical trials. It has one of the busiest day oncology units in Australia, with large populations of breast, gastrointestinal and genito-urinary cancer, melanoma, and gynaecologic cancer patients. The hospital provides all clinical services for treatment of cancer patients. The Szalmuk Family Department of Medical Oncology coordinates all medical oncology and haematology research at Cabrini and has developed translational research in partnership with Monash University through the Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium.

An opportunity is now available for a motivated and enthusiastic professional with relevant experience to join our team.This position is a research-only academic position, which is expected to contribute towards the research effort of the organisation and to develop their research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to the particular field of research.

The appointee will be a part of a collaborative research program between Cabrini Research’s Department of Medical Oncology and the Monash Biomedical Discovery Institute breast organoid program. The Research Fellow will be expected to carry out genomic and proteomic techniques to identify changes within the breast resulting in tumour formation and characterise mechanisms driving drug resistance. This involves and is not limited to tissue processing, establishment and characterisation of human breast organoids from both cancerous and non-cancerous clinical samples, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and complex transcriptional profiling. In addition, the Research Fellow will be involved in the optimisation and carrying out of drug assays.

Requirements of the role:
A doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline area or a closely related research field

Expertise in complex tissue culture growth, preferably experience with organoid cultures

Demonstrated experience in performing various cell culture assays including drug screens is desirable

Experience in gene expression data analysis for experimental applications including single cell assays is desirable

Experience/knowledge in xenograft models is desirable

Experience in immunohistochemistry staining and characterisation is desirable

Demonstrated data analysis and manuscript and research proposal preparation skills; including a solid track record of refereed research publications

Excellent written communication and verbal communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct reports and documents

A demonstrated awareness of the principles of confidentiality, privacy and information handling

Possession of a valid Victorian full drivers licence (as Travel between Cabrini (Malvern / Brighton), Monash University Clayton and collaborative partners is required)
