About The Role

Mater Centre for Neurosciences is currently seeking applications for a passionate and dedicated Epilepsy Fellow to join the Neurology and Epilepsy team on a full time, 6-month fixed term. This position is based at the Mater Centre for Neurosciences, Mater Hospital South Brisbane campus. This position is ideal for a post-FRACP neurologist or trainee looking for additional skills and training in EEG interpretation (level 2 or 3, depending upon prior experience).

The Mater Advanced Epilepsy Unit (MAEU) offers a dedicated surgical evaluation experience. The in-patient monitoring unit has four monitored beds, including capacity for prolonged intracranial monitoring. Evaluation modalities for surgical candidates include stereoEEG, high resolution volumetric MRI, ictal SPECT, PET, fMRI, neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry. Since it was founded in 2015, the MAEU has performed the largest number of SEEG evaluations per year in Australia.

The Department is heavily dedicated to clinically relevant research. Currently active projects are focused on evaluation of autoantibody associated epilepsy, language function in healthy people and patients with epilepsy, optimisation of epilepsy monitoring approaches and various preclinical studies. Any of these research areas would be available and suitable for the fellow’s projects, depending on their particular interests.

Mater Centre for Neurosciences also includes neurologists with specialised interests in neuroimmunology, multiple sclerosis, cognitive neurology, neuromuscular diseases and general neurology, and the largest, most diversely skilled group of neurosurgeons in the state.

Salary range: Commensurate with experience

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Daily ward rounds (five days a week)
  • Epilepsy clinics (twice weekly)
  • Assessment of patients admitted for video-EEG monitoring
  • Interpretation inter-ictal EEG and video-EEG recordings
  • Exposure to stereoEEG methodology including planning, implantation and interpretation
  • Participation in weekly epilepsy review meetings
  • Participation in regular multicentre epilepsy MDT meetings
  • Presentations at Department and Hospital Meetings.
About You

To be considered for this role, the successful applicant must have:
  • Degree in medicine from an approved institution registrable in Australia.
  • Clinical Skills and experience in Epilepsy
  • Successfully completed the core years of Neruology advanced training
