JOB DESCRIPTION

This position provides a culturally appropriate primary health care to Mookai Rosie Bi-Bayan (“MRBB”) clients who are attending Cairns for medical reasons. This includes but is not limited to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women and children in Cairns for antenatal, perinatal, medical and surgical needs. This position supports our clients to undergo preventative primary health care checks, develop their health literacy and facilitate access to relevant services according to the clients’ treatment needs. The appropriate candidate will be responsible for supporting the clients’ holistic needs within a multidisciplinary team and model of care ensuring the health outcomes are improved for our clients’ in the limited time they are with us.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker (“Health Worker”) is expected to work 32 hours per week, as per the rostered nights, with some flexibility in the event of being called on to deal with problems that may unexpectedly arise outside of these hours within the areas of responsibility that fall within the scope of the position.

Shifts start at 4pm and finish at 8:30am the following day. The PM component of the shift is completed between the hours of 4pm and 10pm, where the Health Worker sleeps over on premises on-call should emergency health crisis arise; and recommences the AM component of their shift at 6:30am the following morning (i.e., clock on at 4pm, clock off at 10pm, sleep over, clock on at 6:30am, clock off at 8:30am). Rostered nights are Monday to Thursday.

Remuneration for this position falls within the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services Award, Grades 3-4 and includes the relative penalty rates and shift allowances.
