Full Job Description
An opportunity is available for a Research Assistant to work on molecular biology of the diarrheal pathogen Cryptosporidiumjoin at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the position

We are looking for a Research Assistant (HEW level 5/6) to work on an exciting new project on the diarrheal pathogen Cryptosporidium under the guidance of Associate Professor Chris Tonkin and Professor James McCarthy. Cryptosporidium is the second leading cause of diarrhea worldwide, which disproportionately affects young children in low- and middle-income countries. There are no effective therapies to prevent or treat Cryptosporidium. It is our aim to identify potential new therapies to treat Cryptosporidium infection and move these through clinical trials and furthermore understand the human immune response to infection.

As part of a larger program the McCarthy and Tonkin lab aim to use emerging genetic technologies to make and characterise transgenic Cryptosporidium parasites that are sensitized to clinically available drugs. This will allow for controlled and safe infection of Cryptosporidium in humans. This person will generate transgenic parasites and extensively characterise these both phenotypically and at the genetic level. Furthermore, this person will have to develop new techniques and undertake administrative tasks to comply with regulatory bodies.
