Consultant Psychiatrist

HOPE - Mental Health Division

Hours per week: 14 hours

Employment Status: Permanent fractional

Austin Health's Mental Health Division incorporates a number of specialities and services across community and bed-based services, with inpatient beds located on all three campuses. The Division provides catchment-based area mental health services, in addition to a number of regional and statewide specialty services.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) program. This program features a forward-thinking model of care with a significant peer focus, utilising flexible outreach and evidence-based therapeutic strategies including Single Session Family Therapy, to provide care in a time limited manner. The program has initially been developed to target adult non-case managed consumers who have presented post suicide attempt and do not meet threshold for inpatient admission or case management. It retains significant scope for further model development and expansion depending on future community need.

HOPE clinicians provide tailored, holistic support to people post a suicide attempt with the aim of supporting the person and their carers and families to identify and build the protective factors that reduce the risk of suicide and/or repeated intentional self-harm. The aim of the initiative is to prevent avoidable suicide attempts and death by suicide by providing the target cohort with assertive, tailored post-vention and psychosocial support in the community for a period of up to three months. The program also supports the person’s carer’s and families to identify and build the protective factors that reduce the risk of suicide attempt/completed suicide.
