About The Role

Mater’s Pathology Department has an exciting opportunity for experienced Senior Scientist - Anatomical Pathology to provide support and expertise to histology laboratory. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract working on a full-time (38 hours per week) basis.

Mater Pathology is proud of its history but also is recognised for its experience in highly complex pathology. The service is delivered by dedicated staff that understand healthcare such as our highly skilled specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, laboratory assistants, collection phlebotomists, couriers and other support personnel that ensure you get the correct result on time. Our collection centres are located in over 20 suburbs supporting local communities. In addition, Mater Pathology also offers a 24 hour collection service out of the South Brisbane Mater Adults Hospital for patient convenience.

Salary range: $53.85 - $57.92 (Health Practitioner Level 4) per hour plus superannuation

What You’ll Be Doing

As a team leader, some of your duties will include (but not limited to):

  • Manage the daily workflow of the rostered work area team, including creation and Modification of team rosters,
  • Coordination of staff for coverage of all duties
  • Manage purchasing and inventory management of consumables
  • Assistance with coordination of external equipment maintenance
  • Troubleshooting of equipment malfunction
  • Provides high level problem solving skills and innovative solutions
  • Utilise scientific and professional judgement in all aspects of decision making
  • Apply a high level of scientific knowledge and participation in clinical trials and research as directed by the Supervising Scientist
  • Manage work priorities to effectively meet critical clinical requirements and ensure accurate clinical diagnostic results are reported promptly
  • Actively monitor test turnaround times and follows up on overdue results for internal and referred tests relevant to rostered responsibilities.
  • Review and monitor scientific accuracy and provide guidance and training for graduate and experienced scientists as required.
  • The role may be required to work independently as a sole scientist on ‘after hours’ and weekend shifts and may participate in a 24 hour roster
About You

As the successful applicant, you will possess the following:
  • A Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Medical Laboratory Science or a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Histopathology or an equivalent qualification
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in histopathology laboratories with a least 2 years in supervisory capacity, including cut up and immunohistochemistry
  • Experience in managing and training staff, and laboratory workflow
  • Participation and understanding of technical RCPA QAP requirements
  • Quality management including internal auditing experience
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with validation/verification report writing for NATA submissions in accordance with NPAAC guidelines
  • Comprehensive understanding of statutory legislation, regulations, NATA and ISO standards (ISO 15189)
