Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person centred care. It provides acute, sub-acute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT)—a catchment of approximately 400,000 people. It also services the surrounding Southern New South Wales region which includes the Bega Valley, Bombala, Cooma-Monaro, Eurobodalla, Goulburn, Mulwaree, Palerang, Queanbeyan, Snowy River, Upper Lachlan Shire and the Yass Valley.

CHS administers a range publicly funded health facilities, programs and services including but not limited to:

  • The Canberra Hospital: a modern 600-bed tertiary hospital providing trauma services and most major medical and surgical sub-specialty services.
  • University of Canberra Hospital Specialist Centre for Rehabilitation, Recovery and Research: a dedicated and purpose-built rehabilitation facility, with 140 inpatient beds, 75-day places and additional outpatient services.
  • Mental Health, Justice Health, Alcohol and Drug Services provide a range of health services from prevention and treatment through to recovery and maintenance at a number of locations and in varied environments for people suffering from mental health issues.
  • Five Walk-in Centres: which provide free treatment for minor illness and injury.
  • Seven community health centres: providing a range of general and specialist health services to people of all ages.
  • A range of community-based health services including early childhood services, youth and women’s health, dental health, mental health and alcohol and drug services.
Overview

Of The Work Area And Position

The Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital sees over 90 000 patients per annum, with approximately 20% paediatric age group. The department has a diverse and interesting case mix, with a high trauma load due to its role as the only trauma centre in this catchment area. Staffing for the department consists of thirty-three (33) consultants, making approximately twenty-two (22) full time equivalents including an Academic Chair in Road Trauma and Emergency Medicine. Consultants are present in the department from 8.00am until midnight seven days a week. Full time and part time applicants may be considered.

The department places a strong focus on teaching and successful candidates are encouraged to participate in the certificate of Emergency Medicine through the Australasian College for Emergency medicine during this appointment. The staff are a friendly group of people, all with similar interests, making the Emergency Department a great team to join. This is an ideal position to gain expertise in both paediatric and adult emergencies. It is suited to applicants wishing to consolidate skills prior to commencing emergency medicine training or to those looking to further their expertise before embarking on a career in General Practice. Residents have also undertaken the Diploma of Paediatrics during this year.

The Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital offers a unique, wide-ranging and exciting experience rarely available in a single hospital.

Duties
  • Be responsible for immediate patient care including adequate history taking, physical examination, ongoing continuous review of patient condition and progress, investigations and therapy indicated by unit protocol or as directed by the duty specialist.
  • Perform specialised procedures on the direction and under supervision of the duty specialist.
  • Prepare material for our website, clinical presentations and mortality/morbidity reviews as directed.
  • Participate in rostered duties as allocated (24/7).
  • Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and policies of the CHS. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety.
  • Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high-quality person and family centred, safe and high-quality patient care.

  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
  • Willingness to actively participate in acquiring emergency medical skills.
  • High level of commitment to the emergency medical team and an ability to work collaboratively.
Qualifications

And Experience

Mandatory
  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or be eligible for Registration via the Competent Authority Pathway.
  • At least two completed post graduate years of training prior to the commencement of this position.
  • Current competency in Advanced Life Support
Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
  • Undergo a pre-employment Police check.
  • Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening & vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.
