Our initiatives are strongly aligned to Strong Eyes, Strong Communities – the Five-Year Plan for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health and Vision, developed by Vision 2020 Australia.

About the position

Reporting to the Advocacy and Engagement Manager, we are seeking an experienced and dynamic policy officer to provide high level advocacy and policy advice to the Indigenous Australia Program. To do this role effectively you will have:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Capacity to contribute to a strong policy evidence base through critical analysis
  • Project management skills and ability to be flexible with changing priorities

Key accountabilities

1. Undertake research and policy analysis on current and emerging policy areas related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health and health. 

2. Prepare high quality written materials including briefings, discussion papers and policy positions.

3. Support the Indigenous Australia Program and national eye health sector advocacy initiatives.

4. Work with the IAP to translate research and program evidence into policy positions.

5. Contribute to development of organisation and sector submissions to government and other inquiries as applicable.

6. Develop and implement quality project plans to ensure effective translation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy goals into actionable strategies and plans.

About You

To be successful in this role we are looking for the following:

· Demonstrated ability to communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and working knowledge of the diverse circumstances and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

· High level experience in areas of research, policy analysis and policy development

· High level experience of writing in various formats for internal and external audiences

· Demonstrated understanding of health issues effecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

· Knowledge of national public policy across Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and eye health

· Strong advocacy and influencing skills

· Understanding of advocacy and communication approaches
