JOB DESCRIPTION

The Role:
We are looking for a dedicated Consultant Palliative Care Physician to provide quality palliative care specialist services to the Hospital and Health Service for both inpatient and outpatient care and consultation service.

You will provide a high standard of care for patients and their families and ensure their needs are at the centre of all your decisions. A high level of interpersonal communication skills is essential, as is an empathetic, kind, and supportive approach to care. You will also have the ability to practice as a clinical teacher both at the undergraduate and post-graduate medical level.

The Department of Medicine provides specialist services in general medicine, MAPU Acute Medicine, thoracic medicine, neurology, renal medicine, oncology, palliative care, cardiac, haematology, diabetic services and endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatric, rehab and stroke medicine and infectious diseases medicine.

Hospital:
A 364-bed accredited Teaching Hospital, clinical services are delivered to approximately 300,000 people from 29 facilities, including one large regional referral hospital, one extended inpatient mental health service, three medium sized regional hub hospitals, twelve rural hospitals, three multipurpose health services, three community outpatient clinics and six residential aged care facilities.

In conjunction with the District, it provides an integrated network of acute, mental health, aged care, community and allied health inpatient and outpatient services. There are 79 non-consultant hospital doctors and approximately 30 staff specialists across the various specialties. In addition, there are approximately 40 visiting specialists, who provide services to this hospital.

Location:
Just 90 minutes from Brisbane, this is a modern city with access to all major services and facilities. There is plenty to see and do - take advantage of the many galleries, heritage exhibitions, museums, restaurants, and a great range of shopping centres around the city.

It has a temperate climate and is one of the few regions in Queensland with four distinct seasons. The education, training and tertiary sectors are well catered for, with both private and public schools, vocational training providers and 2 universities in the region. There is also a wide variety of sporting options available for all ages.

It is nicknamed 'The Garden City', with more than 240 public parks and gardens!!

Skills/Qualifications:
The essential capabilities, knowledge and experience for this role are:

  • Demonstrated clinical and technical expertise with appropriate knowledge, skills and ability to deliver quality
    specialist care in palliative care.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to work with and lead other staff.
  • High level oral and written communication skills and the ability to work and liaise with other health
    professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of quality improvement, patient safety and clinical governance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to education and research including a demonstrated personal commitment to
    continuing medical education.

    Essential:

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Registration with or eligibility for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as Specialist in Palliative Care
