Position Summary
Upper GI Surgical Fellow - 2022/2023

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre at the Victoria Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to cancer and one of an elite group of hospitals worldwide to have its own integrated cancer research program and laboratories. Since June 2016 the hospital has been partnered with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospitals in Melbourne. This allows the co-location of many of the services related to upper gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary treatment. The new hospital is associated with the University of Melbourne as well as the many research organisations in the Parkville precinct.


The Upper GI fellow is a 12 month appointment for people having obtained their FRACS or equivalent. It involves working with the Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgeons in a high volume cancer hospital that specialises in minimally invasive tumour management. The position gives extensive exposure to oesophageal, gastric, liver and pancreatic tumours. Additionally, the unit specialises in many rare tumours and has an extensive expertise in neuroendocrine tumours, GIST and sarcomas.


There are extensive research opportunities within the Division of Cancer Surgery as well as research laboratories at our centre. There is also the possibility for private assisting.


The position involves working with a dedicated multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists in a tertiary referral cancer centre. The position will involve working at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and at times assist with the care of Upper GI patients the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The successful applicant will be involved in the diagnosis, work up, surgery and post-operative care of cancers. It also involves the care of non-operative and palliative patients. The fellow is expected to be involved in managing the surgical unit, outpatients, teaching and being involved in the on-call roster. There is also the opportunity to be involved in the Royal Melbourne Hospital trauma on-call. The successful applicant would be expected to be involved with the research programs running through the unit. The applicant is expected to work closely with the Hepatobiliary Fellow at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and will be involved in cross covering care for Upper GI and HPB services across the Parkville precinct.


Salary: $ 101.401.56 for 53 hour fortnight topped up with private assisting to a range between $A125,000 to $A146,000 per annum (remunerated at other hospitals).
