Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Maternal Fetal Medicine (Research Assistant) Unaccredited Trainee

What you will be doing:

This research assistant position is designed to get some assistance with the ongoing research projects in the Fetal Medicine Ultrasound Department at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. This post is particularly suitable for candidates who have significant experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology ultrasound and are seeking to refine their clinical and research skills. This is the ideal opportunity to pursue special interest training in obstetric ultrasound and high risk obstetrics in a unit that has a strong international reputation for research and translational development in maternal and fetal medicine. Accreditation for training can be sought by successful candidates. The department is committed to supporting individuals that wish to complete a postgraduate research degree.

The Department of Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine

The Centre for Women’s Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine at RPA is a quaternary referral service for obstetric and gynaecological imaging. The service offers first trimester nuchal translucency screening for aneuploidy, screening for pre-eclampsia and intra-uterine growth restriction. At the tertiary referral level, the Fetal Medicine Unit offers consultations and expert opinion on fetal anomalies, and performs CVS, amniocentesis and cordocentesis, fetal blood and platelet transfusions and laser therapy for twin/twin transfusion and selective intra-uterine growth restriction.

The service also offers non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and is the first service in Australia to offer this form of screening in the public health system.

Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital is on of Australia's leading hospitals, providing an extensive range of diagnostic and treatment services. Its specialities include cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, cancer, respiratory medicine, neurology, liver and kidney transplants.

The RPA Maternal Fetal Medicine service is also looking to expand to Canterbury Hospital.

Selection Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Ability to communicate with women and their families.
  • Ability to work as part of a medical team.
  • Ability to take responsibility and initiative and administrative experience or talent.
  • Interest and ability to partake in teaching program and ability to conduct research or a quality assurance program.
