    ProCan

    ProCanâ, the ACRF International Centre for the Proteome of Human Cancer, was established at CMRI in 2016. It is a major new program that applies innovative technology to analyse the protein content of small tissue samples. The goal of ProCanâ is to complete a comprehensive proteomic analysis of all cancer types to improve diagnosis, and to enable more precise recommendations for the effective treatment of cancer patients. ProCanâ will analyse around 70,000 adult and children’s cancers over the next 5-7 years with a view to rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice.

    Histopathology Technical Officer, ProCan

    An integral aspect of ProCan research is systematic receipt and tracking of research tissue samples. In addition, traditional histopathology methods are used to examine and sub-sample both frozen and formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues prior to proteomics analysis. We have established a custom histopathology facility for this purpose. An overall goal is to operate at a level that will assist us to achieve accreditation and to facilitate translation of research results in the future.

    We are now seeking to appoint a Histopathology Technical Officer to join the ProCan Laboratory team. The ideal candidate will have experience in preparation of human tissue samples in a clinical and/or research histopathology laboratory environment and show excellent attention to detail. The position will report to the Senior Research Assistant, Histopathology and will be responsible for basic pathology grading against defined guidelines.

    Selection Criteria

    Essential

    •  Minimum qualification Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operation
    • Considerable hands-on sectioning experience in a clinical and/or research histopathology laboratory
    • Strong knowledge and proven track record in sample handling and histology techniques
    • Assessment of slide images against pathology guidelines
    • Instrument cleaning and management experience
    • Demonstrated high level of organisational, reporting and record-keeping skills
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to communicate with team members and collaborators verbally and in writing regarding any errors or discrepancies
    • Possess troubleshooting skills
    • Confidence using Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel

    Desirable

    • Experience handling human tissues or biospecimens.
