About the role


Are you are carer of a family member or friend who has used adult public mental health services? Are you passionate about supporting other carers?


An exciting new opportunity now exists for an experienced Carer Peer Support Worker to work as part of a team of Peer Workers with Eastern Health’s Mental Health Program. The successful applicant will work across a number of adult clinical community teams in Melbourne’s Outer Eastern Region / Maroondah Hospital catchment.



Through sharing wisdom from your own carer experience, the community team focussed Carer Peer Support Worker will provide peer support to family/carers of people using our clinical adult community based mental health services.



You will work collaboratively with families, carers, and staff to assist in identifying carer needs and providing carer support. You will need to be able to reflect on your carer lived experience and be willing to utilise your experience and knowledge to inspire hope, choice and a focus on self-care.



As a peer support worker, you will receive the following additional benefits:




  • Participate in a peer training related to the role; and

  • Regular peer supervision - individual and group; and

  • Support from an existing consumer and carer team dedicated to promoting the voice of lived experience.



About you



To be successful in this role you will have:




  • Lived experience as carer of a family member/friend who has accessed public mental health services.

  • Understanding of mental health peer support principles and ability to use peer support to provide hope, connection, a belief in recovery and the value of self-care.

  • Able to build successful working relationships with a range of clinical staff.

  • Understanding and appreciation of the principles of recovery, including social connectedness, holistic care provision and peer based examples of wellness and trauma informed care.

  • Ability to work autonomously as a senior peer worker in a challenging environment.
