About the Department

St Vincent's Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health, mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison, Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 1107 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.

About the Role

The Registered Nurse (Grade 2) will provide high quality patient care within the team environment. The Registered Nurse (Grade 2) will also be responsible for their own professional development, for supporting and assisting their colleagues and facilitating achievement of specific KPI's as developed for the ward/unit.

Classifications for this position will range from YP3 - YP11 ($67,236 - $89,902)

You have a comprehensive understanding of the health needs for prisoner populations, including knowledge of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and homelessness. You are a team player and a respectful and professional person who demonstrates a high level of moral values, interpersonal and influencing skills and strives to deliver consistency in all that you do. You possess attributes including resilience, integrity and the ability to think on your feet.

Duties

  • Manage the physical and emotional well-being of the patient/s
  • Administer medication in accordance with hospital procedures, protocols and policies
  • Assist with medical and diagnostic procedures carried out in the unit
  • Provide safe effective care and demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and act as a clinical role model by providing the highest standard of direct patient care
  • Ensure to follow all security requirements and familiarise with the policies and local processes
  • Ensure incidents regarding clinical practice are accurately documented and investigated at the time of the incident and the Nurse Unit Manager or delegate is informed
  • Accurately document patient care in accordance with hospital guidelines
  • Effective communication with SVCHS staff, Correctional staff, Port Phillip Prison subcontracted services and external health services.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Degree in General Nursing, Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
  • Past experience as an RN working within an inpatient health care setting
  • Experience (or desire to work) within a correctional health care setting
  • Demonstrated ability in working as part of the multidisciplinary clinical team.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, electronic patient records and patient administration systems.
