The St Vincent's Aged Person's Mental Health Service comprises community care via the Aged Psychiatry Assessment and Treatment Team (APATT), inpatient care via Normanby Unit (20 bed acute mental health inpatient care) and continuing care via the Psychogeriatric Nursing Homes (PGNHs).

About Role

The coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Normanby unit ECT Suite at St. George's in Kew and work in close liaison with Nurse Unit Manager and staff engaged in ECT at both Normanby and St. Vincent's.

You will facilitate ECT operation and monitoring, reporting on activity and compliance with standards and support practice development, education and training for nurses within the Aged Mental Health program. The appointment is at 0.6 FTE Working Monday, Wednesday and Fridays (this may include Public Holidays).

You will ensure responsive and comprehensive psychiatric care in line with department of health expectations and evidence based best practice care as outlined in the Victorian Framework for Recovery-Oriented Practice (2011), Workforce Capability Framework (2015) and the National Standards for Mental Health Services (2017).

The classification for this role will be NP77 ($$109,200 per annum pro rata)

Duties

  • To facilitate excellence in clinical patient care and clinical leadership in ECT management, innovation and research activities in the Aged Mental Health Program and to enhance the clinical practice of St. Vincent's Mental Health Services
  • Responsibility for the day-to-day operation and co-ordination of the ECT Suite at Normanby unit, communicating with team members to ensure that qualified staff undertake administration of ECT and provide best practice clinical care
  • Facilitate practice development related to ECT and inform practice changes and support staff training within the unit such as airway management and recovery nursing skills
  • Ensure equipment is checked and maintained with safe monitoring and administration of medications and treatments within the ECT Suite.
  • Ensure that consumers, carers and their families are informed about ECT: build consumer and carer partnerships in clinical practice, provide advocacy, information regarding rights, responsibilities, privacy and interventions to consumers and carers with culturally and gender sensitive practice to ensure that information is provided in a manner to meet the individual's needs and their feedback informs policy.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Degree or postgraduate diploma in psychiatric/mental health nursing
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification clinical experience within Mental Health with experience in provision of ECT
  • A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2014 and other relevant legislation.
  • A current driver's licence
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines, prioritise workflow and to work co-operatively in a team environment
  • Ability to reliably organise, manage and analyse data and meet quality outcomes
  • Proven verbal and written ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clinical colleagues and consumers/carers
