About the Opportunity

  • Build relationships with community members and service providers in drought affected areas
  • Facilitate and/or support community events and assist in promoting mental wellbeing in drought affected communities + support community-based initiatives focused on wellbeing
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to promote engagement of people in their individual treatment and recovery

About Broken Hill

Often referred to as the “Capital of the Outback”, Broken Hill is an iconic mining town in far west NSW full of spirit, history, diversity and character. It was Australia’s first city to be Nationally Heritage listed and has a bunch of natural and man-made attractions to explore from the Sculpture Symposium to the oldest regional gallery in NSW.

It really is a remote town like no other with a thriving night life as well as the fabulous annual Broken Heel Festival featuring performances from Australia’s best drag queens and showgirls. Far away from the light pollution of the big cities, Broken Hill is an ideal location for star gazing. It also has a number of lookouts that are perfect for indulging in spectacular sunsets over the vast, flat landscape.


Selection Criteria

  • Relevant qualification and a current licence to drive in NSW with the ability to travel extensively throughout the Health District with overnight stays.
  • Evidence of personal experience as a consumer of mental health services, and the ability to utilise the lived experience to support others with their own mental health recovery journey, whilst drawing on effective strategies to maintain wellness. Previous experience of drought and the effects of drought for individuals and their communities
  • An understanding of and commitment to consumer led recovery principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to plan, implement and evaluate group and individual peer led interventions or consultations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and actively contribute to clinical care planning processes in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a range of key stakeholders, GPs, non-government organisations, inpatient and community MHDA teams, consumers and carers.
  • Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication and negotiation skills including information technology skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and understanding of consumer participation and partnership, Person Centred Care, Trauma Informed Care, Consumer Led Recovery, Rights and Responsibilities for Consumers, NSW Mental Health Act 2007 and Amendments and National Mental Health Standards (2010).
