Why Marthakal Homelands Health Service?

MHHS, situated on Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island), is a mobile Yolgnu Medical Service covering 15,000 square kilometers in the remote East Arnhem Land with a population between 250 to 400. There are 29 homelands in the Marthakal Homelands region, for which the medical service is on 24 hours emergency call. Being a mobile medical service means that the health team travel in small planes and four wheel drive vehicles to conduct clinics out on the homelands. What medical equipment can’t be packed can’t be taken, so compact sturdy anti shock equipment is used.

What’s the role?

The primary purpose of the role is to effectively manage a small Aboriginal Controlled Health Service which provides high quality, evidenced based, culturally appropriate and effective primary and dental health care, to improve the health and well-being of people living in the Marthakal Homelands.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to-

  • Effectively lead and manage the Health Service, adhering to the principles of primary health care, with evidence-based practice.
  • Manage health emergencies on Homelands in an effective and timely manner with an expected health outcome.
  • Work in collaboration with the CFO to develop a draft budget, monitor expenditure, produce finance reports, implement agreed actions, and prepare submissions for capital works projects.
  • Develop and implement an annual training plan that promotes skills and knowledge to deliver quality health care and meet all legal obligations.
  • Lead and manage the Marthakal First Aid Program across all service sites and in consultation with all Marthakal Managers.
  • Support and participate in all initiatives and change processes that aim to improve service delivery.

MHHS are looking for people who have experience in practicing prevention, early detection and appropriate intervention to maintain people in as optimal health as possible. Whilst experience in remote primary health clinic environments is desirable, what will really see you thrive in their communities is a shared focus of Yolgnu being healthier, living longer and having better lives.

Before you reach out and apply, we need you to have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification degree and current registration with APHRA
  • Minimum 2-years’ experience working and living in a remote Indigenous community, which is an alcohol free environment
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people for whom English is not their first language
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to manage a small, remote Aboriginal Controlled Health Service delivering primary and dental health care
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of social determinants of health issues affecting Aboriginal people
  • Ability to undergo a successful Criminal History, Working with Children’s Check and gain/maintain a current NT Drivers Licence
