About the jobs:

NSW Health Pathology provides an integrated Anatomical Pathology service across Northern NSW in the New England, Mid-North Coast and North Coast regions. Our team of 9 pathologists and registrars are based in regional tertiary referral hospitals supporting a broad range of specialist services and investment by NSW Health in oncology, radiation and haematology services. They see a wide range of complex and unusual pathology providing an interesting work environment. The team provide services for community and hospital referrals working closely with clinical colleagues and meet regularly for MDTs. You would be joining a team with extensive experience in all aspects of histopathology including lymph node (lymphomas), urological, breast, skin, lung, ENT, gastrointestinal and gynaecological pathology. On-site immunohistochemistry is located in 3 processing laboratories to enable rapid turnaround time of results (most are accessible within 24-48 hours), FNA cytopathology services are provided and they support Breast Screen NSW, reporting all the breast biopsies from the region.

Some of the pathologists are actively involved in teaching at the rural medical schools providing opportunities for academic appointment and research. Continuing education is supported with a generous continuing medical education allowance. These positions are ideally suited to motivated pathologists who would like to make a difference improving pathology services to the local community. Newly qualified pathologists are welcome to apply.

What you'll be doing

  • To provide high quality diagnostic, consultative, procedural and on-call specialty services in Anatomical Pathology, and to participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities commensurate with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
  • The Staff Specialist will ensure a high standard of professional performance and, where required, the encouragement of an academic environment which supports research and development.

Selection Criteria

  1. Currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in Anatomical Pathology, and/or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to basic, applied or clinical research and/or medical education and staff training.
  3. Proven ability to work as a team member with effective communication, interpersonal skills and adaptability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  4. Demonstrated personal qualities including effective communication skills, motivation, initiative, time management and commitment to professional development.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to the principles of clinical quality management, continuous improvement and a contemporary knowledge of National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) Standards and NATA accreditation processes.
  6. Demonstrated contemporary clinical knowledge and technical expertise within the specialty of Anatomical Pathology.
