Forensic Clinical Specialist - Eastern Health Mental Health Program

About the role



The Adult Mental Health Program is looking for the right person to support the building of capacity within the Mental Health Program in assisting consumers with highly complex challenges associated with co-morbid mental health and forensic issues.


Whilst this role will focus on supporting mental health services located within central east area (Box Hill), there will also be capacity to support equivalent services located within the outer east area. 


 This role will involve the provision of primary and secondary consultation, service development and training and education on contemporary practice regarding risk assessment and the management of complex forensic issues. This position will have ongoing support and training from Forensicare to assist with the development of service delivery development initiatives in supporting this consumer group.


The successful applicants will have significant experience in clinical service delivery in mental.

Qualifications & Registration




  • Registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia, Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency.

  • Holds a degree qualification in Social Work that has been approved by the Australian Association of Social Workers for membership as a Social Worker. Maintains compliance with the AASW Continuing Professional Development Policy in order to meet the Eastern Health Allied Health credentialing standard.

  • Full registration or eligibility for full registration as a Psychologist by the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA).

  • Hold a Masters or Doctoral coursework qualification in Clinical Psychology that has been approved by the Psychology Board of Australia.

  • Registration endorsement or eligibility for endorsement in Approved Area of Practice of Clinical Psychology.

  • Hold approved Supervisor status with AHPRA

  • Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board as a Division 1 nurse and completion of post graduate diploma in mental health nursing.



Experience and skills




  • 10 years’ experience as a qualified/fully registered Occupational Therapist/Psychologist/Social Worker/Registered Nurse in mental health including at least 2 years’ experience as a senior clinician.

  • Possess sound working knowledge of evidenced based models of assessment and management of risk relevant to forensic mental health and commitment to working with and delivering high quality outcomes for high risk clients and those with a history of offending.

  • Extensive experience and skills in assessment and management of people with serious mental illness and co-occurring complex issues including experience and skill in working with consumers with substance use and addiction. 

  • Demonstrated experience and skill working with consumers presenting with challenging behaviours.

  • Experience in providing primary assessment and secondary consultation for individuals and teams around complex and contentious practice dilemmas.

  • Demonstrated commitment to and ability to practice utilising the recovery approach in mental health treatment and support, with a focus on working collaboratively with consumers and carers to promote self-determination and enable progress towards reaching personal recovery goals.

  • Excellent knowledge of Mental Health Act Vic 2014 and its associated principles, the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997, the Sentencing Act 1991, and other relevant legislation.

  • Ability to establish and foster collaborative working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including consumers, carers, colleagues, Forensicare, Police, Courts, MHARS, Prisons, Community Corrections and relevant community agencies.

  • A sound working knowledge of, and commitment to, working with consumers from a wide range of ethnic and social backgrounds and providing services that are family and gender sensitive.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, utilising well developed critical analysis skills to achieve efficiency and effectiveness and to work effectively across a range of mental health teams. 

  • Evidence of commitment to ongoing professional development and clinical supervision.

  • Evidence of leading a quality improvement or research activity in a specific mental health setting.

  • A Proven ability in developing and delivering high quality mental health training and education for medical, clinical and non-clinical workforces.

  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary workforce and across the agency.

  • Excellent communication skills: written, verbal and interpersonal with demonstrated ability to collaborate and work as an effective team member at a local and organisational level to deliver organisational outcomes. Ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with a range of internal and external service providers. 

  • Demonstrated negotiation, problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Proficient in a range of electronic applications including but not limited to CPF, CMI, PFM, Microsoft, Outlook, Excel or as relevant to role.

  • A current Victorian drivers licence.

  • A satisfactory Police Check is required prior to appointment.



Desirable




  • Demonstrated experience and skill in working with consumers with a forensic history. 

  • Training or qualification in the areas of Solution Focussed Therapy, Sensory Modulation, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Developmental Psychiatry Course or other therapies

  • Research, publication and public presentation experience.

  • Flexibility in working hours to provide leave cover as negotiated.
