Where you'll be working

The Newborn Care Centre is a forty-four (44) bed, Level 6 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specializing in pre-term surgery where staff help care for over 1,000 babies each year. The Registered Nurse/Midwife will be required to work in all areas of the Newborn Care Centre with support provided by Nursing Educators and Clinical Nurse Consultants with in-house education and skill development opportunities available for all staff.

Staff within the Newborn Care Centre work a rotating roster with a twelve (12) hour shift pattern.

What you'll be doing

The Nurse Educator Grade 2 Newborn Care Centre (NCC) is responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of nursing education programs in Newborn Care Centre with Level 3 tertiary referral centre.

The Nurse Educator (NCC) is responsible for program development planning and coordinating and evaluation of the clinical education of registered nurses, student midwives and nurses, enrolled nurses and mothercraft nurses within the Newborn Care environment. The Nurse Educator develops, coordinates and evaluates the Transition to Practice program, Postgraduate and Re-Entry Programs providing structured orientation with theoretical component to all levels of NCC. The Nurse Educator develops and implements education programs within the context of the complex clinical environment of Newborn Care Centre as well as providing intensive care practice development for staff enhancing the care of extremely premature neonates; critically ill neonates; and neonates requiring complex surgical procedures.

The Nurse Educator will develop, plan, coordinate and evaluate orientation to Newborn Care Centre for new staff members. The Nurse Educator develops and coordinates a number of education programs to facilitate the professional skill and practice development of appropriate NICU skills for all registered nurses employed within the Newborn Care Centre e.g. care of postoperative neonates; extreme prematurity; ventilatory support; high frequency ventilation etc.

The Nurse Educator will assist in the development of supportive Clinical Nurse Specialists and Registered Nurses so they can provide point of care clinical supervision within the Newborn Care Centre. The Nurse Educator will coordinate the Preceptor Program in this area and will assist other staff in their professional practice responsibility as educators by providing resources and support. The Nurse Educator will coordinate appropriate clinical experience in Newborn Care Centre for students in conjunction with the designated supervisor.

  • The Nurse Educator Newborn Care Centre has a Hospital and District role for the development, implementation and delivery of nursing education programs in:
    • Post-registration certificates
    • Continuing nurse/midwife education
    • Transition programs for newly registered nurses, newly registered midwives
    • Post-enrolment enrolled nurses’ courses, and General staff development courses
  • Develops, implements and delivers the Skill Development Program in Neonatology for nurses and midwives across the Hospital.

The Nurse Educator develops, implements and delivers Advanced Skills Training and Credentialing for registered nurses and midwives across the Hospital.

  • The Nurse Educator supervises Total Patient Care (TPC) Assessments for New Graduates at Novice and Expert level in SCN prior to their six week supervision in NICU. All staff applying for CNS will complete a TPC with the educator
  • Provides external education to Neonatal Intensive Care / Special Care Nursery Unit staff across the Area.
  • Responsible for all nursing education related to the management of surgical cases in neonates across the Royal Hospital for Women.
  • Develops, implements and delivers the Neonatal Resuscitation Training Program across the Royal Hospital for Women.
  • Supports EOC facilitation in NCC
  • Responsible for Practise Development
  • Is integral in the implementation of all Quality projects

  1. Registered as a Nurse or Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.
  2. Recent extensive experience in clinical practice within the neonatal intensive care environment.
  3. Holding post registration clinical and education qualification relevant to the position.
  4. Demonstrated effective leadership skills including highly developed skills in communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop, coordinate, deliver and evaluate education and training programs.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of contemporary adult learning principles.
  7. Computer literacy and understanding of relevant information systems.
