The Royal Melbourne Hospital

As one of the largest health services in Victoria, and a team of more than 10,000 strong, we provide a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services; as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient and community programs. We are a designated state-wide provider for services including trauma, and we lead centres of excellence for tertiary services in several key specialties including neurosciences, nephrology, oncology, cardiology and virtual health.

We are looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join our Interpreter team. This is a permanenet part time position as Arabic Interpreter, working 48 hours per fortnight, based at the City Campus and Royal Park Campus.

Your new team:

The Interpreting Service at RMH provides highly professional and certified interpreters to facilitate the communication between health professionals and their patients via Face-Face, Video or Telephone Interpreting. We have an in-house team of 15 interpreters who speak Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese & Mandarin), Italian, Greek, Turkish and Vietnamese. Additionally, our service provides advice on translations, and patient information.

This position is to assist our non-English speaking patients across the organisation with their health care requirements by accompanying them to their medical appointments. You will also be asked to carry out administrative duties as required.

Your success in this role, will be in your ability to

  • Understand various interpreting methods, translating theory and its application to practice

  • Work under pressure, collaboratively and independently

  • educate others about interpreter usage and issues related to cultural awareness

Your Contribution

  • NAATI Certified Interpreter / Translator

  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills

  • High level of communication skills

  • Experience in working within a culturally diverse health workforce or equivalent

  • Skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel and Internet

  • High level of attention to detail
