Senior Medical Officer (SMO)

Fixed Term Full or Part Time
(min. 40hrs up to 86 hrs per fortnight) 

We are seeking a suitably qualified Emergency Senior Medical Officer (SMO) who holds appropriate membership and is fully registered in Australia, to join our dedicated team at Wimmera Health Care Group - Horsham Campus. This position is part of our Emergency Department that consists of 10 cubicles which includes 2 resuscitation beds, and sees an average of 15,000 attendances per annum.This full or part time position isavailable from May 2021 with a contract of up to three years and includes an attractive remuneration package in accordance with the Medical Specialists Enterprise Agreement.

The ED SMO will actively participate in the planning, co-ordination, evaluation and implementation of a range of clinical interventions to deliver high quality, efficient and person-centred care. The SMO will report to the Director of Emergency Medicine and provide clinical assessment, management and treatment to patients, whilst working in a highly collaborative manner with the broader nursing and allied health team. This position includes the supervision of Registrars and Interns and will also participate in our teaching program.

Key Selection Criteria include:


  • Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition

  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position

  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other team members of the hospital

  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical team members
