About the role:
The Goulburn Valley Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee (GV Health HREC) is registered with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The Committee operates in accordance with the NHMRC’s National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007 along with all updates) (the National Statement).
The primary role of the GV Health HREC is to protect the welfare and rights of participants in research, and to uphold ethical standards and principles. In doing this, the GV Health HREC ensures that research proposals conform to the requirements of the National Statement. The GV Health HREC meets a minimum of 6 times a year for approximately 2 hours.
The functions of the GV Health HREC are to:
  • review HREC applications in accordance with the National Statement;
  • while reviewing, consider the ethical and privacy implications of all proposed research projects involving humans and determine whether they are acceptable in accordance with the National Statement;
  • monitor all approved research projects until completion;
  • comply with all guidelines and relevant legislation
HREC Member Roles and Responsibilities
  • attend a minimum of six meetings a year
  • attend continuing education or training programs in research ethics as required or requested by the GV Health HREC Chair or Secretary
  • if required and in addition, contribute in the HREC Subcommittee as a member for reviewing Low Risk Ethics Applications, Quality Improvement applications, Amendments and other related matters as per the Subcommittee Terms of Reference (ToR)
  • attend other ethics committee related planning and improvement meetings
Each HREC member will be allocated a number of HREC applications for review. Two weeks prior to a scheduled meeting, they shall receive either (1) a password protected USB by mail or (2) an email of the papers requireing review. All reviews must be in accordance with the National Statement.
Expressions of interest are sought from people with the following experience:
  • Pastoral role, such as a Minister of Religion or Aboriginal elder;
  • Solicitor, preferably with experience in health law, or privacy or administrative law;
  • Person with experience in the care, counselling and treatment of others; and
  • Layperson who has no affiliation with the institution or organisation, who is not involved in medical, scientific, or legal work, and who is from the local community
