Purpose of the position
The Unit Director for the Brolga Adolescent Inpatient Unit is to work in collaboration with the unit medical ,other clinical staff team and wider staff of CYMHS, general adult mental health services and general health staff of the Northern Sydney (NSLHD) and other Local Health Districts (LHD) to lead, develop and maintain mental health services of the highest possible quality and safety for consumers and carers.
The Brolga Adolescent Inpatient Unit is a 12-bed specialised inpatient unit located in the Sydney Metro Area on the Hornsby Hospital campus. Its aim is to provide safe, secure and high quality mental health care to adolescent consumers, in collaboration with their carers and families. The Brolga model of care focuses on a multidisciplinary approach with high emphasis on individual, family, and group therapy. The high therapy/low conflict model has led to very low rates of seclusion and restraint since its inauguration. A central part of the treatment plan is to work in close collaboration with the different outpatient services to facilitate a smooth transition to a least restrictive therapeutic setting as soon as clinically appropriate. The Brolga referral process allows for the admission of adolescents with the higher clinical needs as well as to maintain the integrity.
Provide clinical management and treatment of patients under your care in a Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC). The position will provide clinical consultation services within NSLHD and will contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within the District.

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatry (FRANZCP) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia and Certificate of Advanced Training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (RANZCP) or Membership of the Faculty of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (RANZCP) or currently enrolled in such training or equivalent qualifications.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
  3. Demonstrated experience and high performance as a senior clinician in acute adolescent psychiatry, general acute hospital psychiatry and community-based and inpatient CYMHS settings, including experience in working with the NSW Mental Health Act and understanding of and commitment to relevant Local Health District, Ministry of Health and National mental health priorities and plans.
  4. Proven experience in management and leadership, including proven ability to work as a leader of a multidisciplinary clinical team, service or facility
  5. Demonstrated interest in improvement of clinical governance of mental health services, including quality improvement methodologies, experience or willingness to participate in clinical research and a commitment to fostering this interest in medical staff and other clinicians
  6. Experience in teaching psychiatry to medical, nursing and allied health students/staff, psychiatry trainees and others as required and a willingness for ongoing involvement in such activities
  7. Demonstrated skills in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders and organisations, Including consumers and carers
