Forensicare provides a detailed reception mental health screening assessment for every prisoner received into custody at the Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) in Spencer Street West Melbourne; outpatient clinics to mentally ill prisoners within the prison; a 16 bed Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) which provides initial assessment and treatment to seriously mentally ill prisoners; an after- hours mental health crisis intervention service and consultancy and training services for prison and service staff on the treatment and management of male prisoners with mental health issues.

About the role:

Social workers aim to effectively collaborate with individuals, family members/carers and a range of stakeholders to address criminogenic and offending-related needs, recovery and rehabilitation goals, cultural/spiritual and social needs and for individuals to progress through their orders as well as addressing mental health and legal issues.


  • Demonstrate highly developed skills when undertaking social work assessments of patients within a multidisciplinary corrections setting.
  • Formulate and document client focused care co-ordination plans, with emphasis on more complex management issues.
  • Demonstrate skills in the appropriate assessment of patient discharge/release needs, and matching these with relevant services for the effective preparation and ongoing support of patients re-entering the community.
  • Demonstrate an ability and commitment to negotiate and implement a care plan with patients and colleagues and to direct and complete appropriate social work services to a high quality in the various settings within Forensicare.
  • Undertake structured family assessments, examining support structures and need for psycho or legal education and referral to specific community-based service.

Skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work coupled with eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
  • Working knowledge and application of relevant legislation, guidelines and standards of practice in the delivery of care and social work interventions, preferably within a complex environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery and recovery-oriented practice.

Mandatory qualifications & registrations:

  • Approved degree in Social Work and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
