What you'll be doing

Improving the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities is a priority of the NSW Government. Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) is committed to ensuring Aboriginal people and families receive the support and attention they need. The Aboriginal Mental Health Clinical Leader position is a district-wide position within the ISLHD Mental Health Service (MHS) reporting directly to the Service Development Manager. The position will foster and sustain the delivery of culturally safe, trauma informed, holistic, person and family-centred care and healing.
The Clinical Leader will be responsible for the oversight of the implementation of the NSW Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2020-25 in consultation with the Director of Mental Health and the Director of Aboriginal Health Strategy.

An eligibility list will be created for future temporary and permanent full-time and part-time positions.

Selection Criteria;

  1. This is an identified position in accordance with Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Applicants must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent who has a demonstrated ability to work with and earn the trust and respect of Aboriginal people, communities and organisations.
  2. At least one of the relevant qualifications, as listed. Graduate of the Bachelor of Health Science (Djirruwang Program). Occupational Therapist, Registered Nurse, Registered Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist, currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Qualified Social Worker eligible for full registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
  3. Demonstrated capacity to provide high level consultation and clinical input in regards to culturally appropriate and effective mental health treatment and support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and practice of consumers’ families and natural supports participating within the treatment process, as appropriate and in accordance with the NSW Mental Health Act 2007 and demonstrated understanding of key directions outlined in The NSW Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy 2020.
  5. Effective interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and personal resilience in the context of providing leadership in a diverse and complex organizational environment.
  6. Demonstrated capacity to provide high level input into service planning service development and service evaluation initiatives.
  7. Demonstrated high level communication and negotiation skills (written, electronic and verbal) and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a diverse range of key stakeholders.
  8. Current unrestricted NSW driver's licence.
