About the Safe haven Café and your role


The a Safe Haven Café model aims to provide a safe, therapeutic space outside of normal business hours that is intended to support and empower consumers. It will not take the place of clinical interventions provided by other service providers, but enable the consumer to build on that support, explore therapeutic options and identify local appropriate supports if needed.

SVHM’s Safe Haven Café incorporates peer support workers and volunteers with a lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, who work alongside mental health professionals (both paid and volunteer).

Your focus will be on providing individuals with the opportunity to learn about their own response to crisis and to develop self-management skills to break that cycle of crisis.

However, if people prefer to sit alone quietly, without intervention from staff or peers, that is equally welcomed. The most important thing is that people know the café is there for them however they choose to use it.

The clinician and peer workers work closely together to identify how they can provide support to consumers that meets their need in a non-clinical therapeutic environment but does not take care from usual services or overlook clinical presentations that require redirection to acute clinical intervention services.

The clinician provides triaging of SHC ‘customers’ if needed, debriefing for the LE Peer Workers and support and guidance to the LE Peer Workforce and ED when required.

Classification Range

  • OT/SW Grade 2 YB20 - YB23 or YC42 - YC45 ($81,328 - $93,490 per annum pro rata)
  • RPN Grade 3 NP81 - NP74 ($91,000 - $101,056 per annum pro rata)

Duties

  • Provide a supportive and therapeutic environment that promotes independence, opportunity and recovery for those who attend the cafe
  • Support customers as experts and leaders of their own care
  • Actively upholding the culture of hope by using optimistic language supporting people and celebrating people’s recovery efforts
  • Working with people to support and sustain existing resources, assets, networks and relationships, and to access opportunities, resources and services to achieve their recovery goals.
  • Actively challenging stigmatising attitudes, discrimination and social exclusion.
  • Provide information and support customers to make their own referral to other appropriate community support programs and services as required.
  • Facilitate wellbeing and psycho-education opportunities as required in partnership with the peer support worker and support Peer Support Workers in their role and provide advice as required
  • Assist in building consumer and carer partnerships and involvement in the Cafe
  • Assist in creating relationships and liaison with relevant stakeholders
  • Participate in the evaluation of the café through data collection and other activities that are Human Centre Design based.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Diploma or Degree (minimum) in Nursing which meets the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Division 1 or 3.
  • Bachelor of Social Work (B.SW). Eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Work and registered as a Social Worker with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. Eligible for membership of Australian Association of Occupational Therapy and registered as an Occupational Therapist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Knowledge and ability to conduct a mental health assessment to determine the need for contact with Mental Health services in ED.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and an understanding of the role of peer workers and using Lived Experience in work settings
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and conflict resolution skills working with limited supervision.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including sound oral and writing skills.
  • Highly desirable: a lived experience of mental health issues and demonstrated ability to use this within a workplace setting
